Economy of British Indian Ocean Territory

The British Indian Ocean Territory is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom located in the Indian Ocean, positioned midway between Tanzania and Indonesia. It consists of the Chagos Archipelago, comprising seven atolls with over 1,000 individual islands, most of which are very small, totaling a land area of 60 square kilometres. The largest and southernmost island is Diego Garcia, covering 27 square kilometres, housing a Joint Military Facility operated by the United Kingdom and the United States. Despite being administratively remote from London, Diego Garcia is often considered the local capital.<br>The territory's population comprises solely British and United States military personnel, along with associated contractors, totaling approximately 3,000 individuals as of 2018. The expulsion of Chagossians from the Chagos Archipelago took place between 1968 and 1973, involving about 2,000 people who were forcibly relocated by the UK government to Mauritius and Seychelles, even from distant islands far from the military base on Diego Garcia. Today, the displaced Chagossians continue to seek the right to return to their homeland, yet the UK government has consistently denied them re-entry, despite appeals from numerous human rights organizations. Access to the islands remains restricted to Chagossians, tourists, and the media.
