The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is an important part of the German government's international climate finance commitments. The IKI has been implemented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) in close cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA) since 2022. With the IKI, the three ministries are jointly supporting solutions in developing and emerging countries in order to implement and ambitiously further develop the nationally determined contributions to climate protection anchored in the Paris Agreement. This includes measures to adapt to the effects of climate change and to preserve and rebuild natural carbon sinks, taking into account ecological, economic and social concerns. With regard to biological diversity, the IKI also supports its partner countries in achieving the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The three ministries jointly agree on the basic IKI framework. This includes the instruments that help to ensure and review the values and responsibility of the IKI, the various funding calls and external communication. The activities of the IKI projects range, for example, from advising political decision-makers on building competencies and technology partnerships to risk protection through innovative financial instruments. This also includes studies, advice on project preparation for infrastructure development and investment instruments for climate protection or the preservation of biological diversity.
