The Leipzig public utilities supply around a third of Leipzig's residents with heat via the approximately 500-kilometer-long district heating network. Due to the efforts in Leipzig to be climate-neut ral by 2040, the existing infrastructure is to be rethought. A first step towards this is the phase-out of coal and the associated end of the supply of heat from the Lippendorf power plant. To compensate for these amounts of heat, in addition to the in-house generation in new power plants, a significant proportion of the district heating can come from previously unused industrial waste heat.
