Description - Description: The railways in Europe operate their own radio network, called GSM-R. The radio network is used for internal communication between the control centers and with the locomotive drivers or customer escorts. The current railway radio technol ogy GSM-R ("Global System of Mobile Communication-Rail") will reach the end of its service life in the mid-2030s, after more than 30 years in operation. The regulatory requirements oblige the Swiss railways, as the system leader, to one day replace GSM-R with the new European standard FRMCS ("Future Railway Mobile Communication System").
