RFP- Developing Adolescents’ Workbook Background Investing in Adolescent Girls and ensuring they remain in school contributes to the realization of the human rights of the girls, especially in achieving gender equality in education and also enabling girls to overcome harmful practices like child marriage and child labor. Rajasthan in the last few decades has shown considerable improvement in various socio-economic indicators. But due to deeply entrenched patriarchal mindset, challenges remain in achieving gender equality in terms of education and health Indicators. In terms of gender disparities, Rajasthan is grappling with low Child Sex Ratio (888 females for 1000 males; Census 2011) and high Child Marriage prevalence which reflects the gender-based discrimination that is prevailing in the society. As per the NFHS-5, 25.4% of women age 20-24 years were married before age 18 years. Gender discrimination that is prevalent before the girl child's birth is perpetuated throughout a female's life cycle, and manifests in diminished access to nutrition, health, education and gainful employment and other opportunities for development and access to better life options. Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas were initiated in those backward blocks where female literacy was low and where there were higher number of adolescent girls from vulnerable backgrounds. In Rajasthan, altogether there are 317 KGBVs comprising of Type I, III, & IV and out of these 186 schools are in the blocks where the educational levels are poor and 14 KGBVs are in places where there is a higher percentage of minority population. Type I consist of adolescent girls from class 6-8, Type III from class 6-12 and Type IV from 9-12. Type I and III are in combination of schools and hostels or only hostels while Type IV consist of only hostels. Various studies or assessments conducted with regard to KGBV has shown that even though the access related objectives have been met through these schools, there are other important issues that need to be addressed. The issues include Transaction of the curriculum in these schools is a challenge as many of the girls who enroll in KGBV are previous drop outs and have not gone to a regular school for at least one to two years Teachers’ capacities are limited in transacting the curriculum Dropout girls who join the KGBV are not able to cope with the condensed course that would bridge them to either 6th, 7th or 8th Class KGBVs in the minority geographic areas face issues related to dropouts during the ongoing classes The curriculum is focused on academics without sufficient opportunities for application of learnings to real life situations. The health, reproductive health and nutrition is very important for the adolescent girls and there also needs to be a focus on the Menstrual Health hygiene Management. Adolescent girls in KGBV have different emotional needs and access to counselling services is very important. UNFPA Rajasthan’s intervention with KGBVs would help reach out to and empower girls from marginalized communities. It will also help to strengthen the capacities of girls to make informed decisions related to their health and well-being, solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathize with others, challenge discrimination and manage their lives in a healthy and constructive manner. The intervention would specially focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health, gender related issues & the curriculum will be rights-based gender transformative. It will use the life skills approach for participatory, learner centric pedagogies. The major objective of the project include: To build capacities of the teachers, wardens and peer educators of the KGBV Schools and hostels to transact the health curriculum using life skills approach to provide age-appropriate information about health and nutrition to the adolescent girls in schools To enhance the knowledge among the adolescent girls on information on health, nutrition and sexual & reproductive health and services related to it To establish mentoring system for enhancing knowledge and skills of teachers, wardens and peer educators for high e quality transaction of the curriculum by building the capacities of the identified mentors To enhance the access to the counselling services for the adolescents through multiple strategies through a combination of both online and onsite counselling approaches. Purpose of Adolescents Workbook The adolescent workbook will help us inassess adolescents understanding and knowledge about various life skills, which will further help us strengthen our intervention.CECOEDECON/UNFPA would like to recruit an agency to provide support in designing and developing content of the workbook based on School Health and Wellness curriculum for the adolescents. The workbook will focus on assessing adolescents’ knowledge in 11 thematic areas (as mentioned in the School Heath Program curriculum). Objective of the Assignment The overall objective of the assignment is to produce a high-quality adolescent’s workbookthat caters to adolescents enrolled in class 6-12. Specific tasks for the agency With assistance from the core team ofUNFPA/CECODECON, the selected agency will be required to do the following: Develop the content of the workbook based on 11 themes Ensure that the content/questions framed is in engaging and is adolescent age group specific Ensure that the content is specific to adolescents of the region (community, geography,etc) Present a draft version of workbook to UNFPA/CECOEDECON for comments/feedback on contents.
