Terms of Reference (ToR) Production of Videos on Gender Responsive Teaching (GRT) Program: Girls’ Education Program 1. Background 1.1About the organization Room to Read India was established in 2003 and presently has programs in twelve states – Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi NCR, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Room to Read is a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, our innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools during two time periods that are most critical in a child’s schooling: early primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ education. Room to Read fundamentally believes in delivering impactful programs that fall within the gender-responsive to gender-transformative range (or right-end of the gender integration continuum) as possible, to truly support sustainable gender equality through education. With this vision, Room to Read developed the Girls’ Education Program to address the gender-specific challenges adolescent girls face by supporting them to stay in school and build the skills they need to lead healthy, successful, and empowered lives. Teachers can serve as role models to students by embodying gender-responsive and empowering behavior such as: using encouraging words and calling on students equally, no matter their gender; respecting boundaries that adhere to the Teacher Code of Conduct; and upholding gender-empowering agreements within the classroom that ensure safety and dignity for each learner. 2.
