Request For proposal Study on assessment of dietary intake patterns and nutritional status of under-five children in urban slums of Kolkata and Siliguri Municipal Corporations, West Bengal About the Organization: Child in Need Institute (CINI) is a national level NGO that works in different parts of India to promote sustainable development in education, protection, health and nutrition for child, adolescent and woman in need. Child in Need Institute is headquartered at Kolkata (Calcutta) with state operations in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh. The organization has been involved in several major community development projects in India since 1974, to support the women, adolescents, and children to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential irrespective of constraints and huddles. The organization strives for the betterment of the marginalized people in collaboration with the Indian/State –Government, UN Agencies, Corporates, and other local and International NGOs. Till date its activities have reached around ten million people across its operating states. CINI provides technical assistance to different corporate foundations, UN organizations, INGOs for designing, operations and knowledge management of their projects across five states. Project background: The project title “Fight Malnutrition and Provide Training to Anganwadi Workers and Nutrition Professionals” aims to improve the nutritional status of vulnerable women, children, and adolescents, improving access to nutrition and food security services of government programs in four districts of West Bengal, Assam, and Jharkhand. The project is supported by ORACLE. The core objectives of the project are: To demonstrate a community-based model towards improving the nutritional status of vulnerable women of reproductive age group, under-five children, and adolescents through sectoral convergence in the districts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Assam. To address the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition (nutrition at-risk and high-risk pregnant women, children, and adolescents) by strengthening last mile service delivery at the community and institutional level through government flagship programs. To address nutritional anaemia among women, children and adolescents by strengthening services at facilities and community through Anaemia Mukt Bharat Program. To ensure food security and welfare entitlements of vulnerable adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers, and children below 6 years. To assess food and nutrition security, and household level food distribution inequity in the vulnerable families of notified and non-notified urban slums and promote healthy diets for reducing the risk of malnutrition. The project reachesout to malnourished pregnant and lactating women, adolescents, and children below 6 years considered as direct beneficiaries. AWWs, ASHA, HHWs, Women Health Collectives (Mahaila Arogya Samiti /Self Help Groups), Nutrition DOOTs/Community Volunteers, and others considered as indirect beneficiaries. The purpose and objectives of the study: Purpose of the study: The purpose of the study is to identify the facilitators and barriers to compliance with the ideal feeding practices of children 0-23 months and 24-59 months of age and the socio economic and cultural factors that influence them. The dietary survey data will also provide pointers on improving infant and child feeding practices using available foods from the local market. Objectives of the study 1. In the first part, carry out the assessment and documentation of existing infant and child feeding practices, assessment of the nutritional status of young children, and identification of opportunities for improving feeding practices, which will serve as inputs for program design. 2. In the second part, carry out the age appropriate “recipe development” through participatory learning and action, using locally available low cost nutritious foods in the market. The results of these will feed into the design of action plan for improving child feeding practices to prevent malnutrition. Study site and targeted audience: The study will be undertaken in urban slums of project areas covering 3 boroughs in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and 4 boroughs in Siliguri Municipal Corporations (SMC), West Bengal. 3 Boroughs of Kolkata Municipal Corporation consist of 28 wards whereas 4 boroughs of Siliguri Municipal Corporation consist of 10 wards. The sample will be drawn from each of the borough. The target audience will be the lower strata of not notified and notified population of urban slums.
