Description - Description: In March 2023, the text of a new agreement (BBNJ: Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was adopted. The agreement, also known as the High Seas Treaty, concerns the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The negotiations lasted more than 15 years. Belgium played a crucial role in these negotiations, notably as a member of the Negotiations Bureau, as lead negotiator for the European Union and as leader of the Blue Leaders alliance. The text of the agreement was formally approved on 19 June 2023 and opened for signature and ratification on 20 September 20
