Water For People India Trust Installation of FSM Unit under Community Sanitation Program in Urban Slums of Kolkata, West Bengal About Organization Water For People India Trust (hereafter referred to as Water For People – India) is a public charitable trust (registered in 2008) which focusses on water, sanitation, health and hygiene infrastructure development, institution building, and education projects and thus has similar vision, mission and values to Water For People USA and operates in the geographical area of Republic of India. As a combination of Branch Office and Water For People India Trust, Water For People - India has longstanding programs to achieve Everyone Forever in the states of West Bengal and Bihar. It also has a small presence in Odisha since 2016 and in 2017 a drinking water initiative expanded to Amravati district, Maharashtra. Until September 2017, Water For People - India programs have been implemented in 20 districts in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, consistent with Water For People’s global vision and mission.In all, 1.1 million people have been reached through community drinking water and sanitation, WASH in public institutions and market led approaches to sanitation. About Project Community Driven Urban Sanitation in Kolkata Slums: ITC Mission Sunehra Kal, a social investment program of ITC Limited is being implemented in Eastern India by Water for People India Trust since 2014-2015. WFPIT is implementing Community Sanitation since 2016-2017 in Kolkata (West Bengal), in partnership with ITC Limited. The project focuses on good sanitation practices, sustaining the maintenance of renovated toilet blocks. As on date, 103 community toilets in the targeted core catchment areas under KMC have been successfully renovated into fully functional gender segregated toilet units with running water, urinals, and space for bathing, changing room with disposal system for ensuring privacy and menstrual hygiene. Deliverables To install a Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) treatment unit in 1 Community Toilet under an urban slum of Kolkata for treating effluent from septic tanks of community latrines, the scope of work will typically involve several key steps and considerations: Site Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive site assessment to understand the specific requirements, including the physical condition of the latrine block, its usage patterns, soil conditions, local regulations, and available space for the treatment unit. Design and Planning: Develop a detailed design plan for the FSM treatment unit. This includes selecting appropriate treatment technologies (such as anaerobic digestion, aerobic treatment, constructed wetlands, etc.) based on the volume of effluent, available space, local conditions, and budget constraints. Procurement of Equipment and Materials: Identify, source, and procure the required equipment, materials, and components for constructing the treatment unit. This may include tanks, piping, pumps, filters, and any specialized treatment technology. Construction and Installation: Execute the construction phase, including excavation, foundation laying, tank installation, piping connections, and setting up treatment systems according to the approved design. Ensure quality control and adherence to safety standards during construction. Testing and Commissioning: Conduct thorough testing of the treatment unit to ensure it operates effectively and meets the required treatment standards. Adjustments and fine-tuning might be necessary during this phase. Once the system performs satisfactorily, commission it for regular operation. Training and Capacity Building: Provide training to local operators or community members responsible for managing and maintaining the FSM treatment unit. Educate them on proper operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures. Monitoring and Ongoing Maintenance: Establish a monitoring plan to regularly assess the performance of the treatment unit. Develop a maintenance schedule to ensure continued efficient operation and address any issues that arise promptly. Train WFPIT team as well as the community people on the same. Community Engagement: Involve the community throughout the process, including consultations, awareness programs, and participation in decision-making, to ensure the sustainability and acceptance of the FSM treatment unit. Documentation and Handover: Prepare comprehensive documentation detailing the design, construction, operation, and maintenance procedures of the FSM treatment unit. Conduct a formal handover to the relevant authorities or community representatives.
